Smart Building Integration and Control Industry Update

A presentation and discussion on the smart connected buildings community including key business issues and technology around the economy, talent, cloud, sustainability, cyber and software- including AI and other key applications.

1) BAS Economy – The BAS industry has seen many years of growth, but with current inflation and covid’s effect on different sectors within the BAS industry, how is the current BAS economy affecting the business and how is short term and long-term outlook.

2) Talent – The makeup of technology organizations today vs. five years ago. What new roles have been established? More sales, software, cyber etc.? How has recruiting of this talent changed? What are we doing right or wrong?

3) BAS in the Cloud? How will the adoption of cloud control for BAS change our business? What are some of the advantages and disadvantages? How will systems be designed to ensure a building can operate if it loses its internet connection? How will cloud control help BAS combat cyber threats? Will Hybrid (combined on premise and cloud) be an important option while companies work through cloud strategies.

4) Cyber Security is a growing concern for the BAS community with a significant increase in geopolitical cyber threats to our infrastructure. What is the status or threat level for your company and your customers? How are you changing your business to combat the cyber threat to our industry? (Ed)

5) Sustainability – Automations systems been managing (or capable of managing) energy for 40 years. What is different now? New capabilities? Grid enablement? Enabling technologies (wireless etc.)?

6) AI – from productivity enhancement to all out autonomous control, AI is positioned to reshape our role in the smart building. How do you see AI being applied today in our businesses? And in future products.

Ed Merwin has over 48 years of experience in the building automation industry in field operations, sales, marketing, and management. Ed was with Honeywell, Inc. for 25 years before joining Tridium, Inc. in 2001. Ed is the Director of Strategic Business working with Tridium marketing, engineering, and sales teams to support Tridium’s long term business strategy in various markets. He also works with end users, owners, consultants, and system integrators daily to help understand the technology needs of these valued customers.
